Botanical Drawing, Open Studio

The winter months are a challenge in the Northeast. We work at our craft in our cozy homes, and wait for spring. February is the perfect time to meet up with our fellow botanical artists to share an ongoing project, or start a new one. Come for a day of drawing, critique, and some "one on one" from the instructor. Please bring graphite or colored pencils, and subject of your choice. Drawing experience necessary. Please bring lunch and snacks.

Botanical Drawing: Silver Point

The intricate beauty of flowers and plant life really shines in silverpoint. The metal drawing develops a soft patina over time. Using a silver wire held in a stylus, master an organic approach to drawing. A light touch is required to achieve the delicate balance. Adding subtle touches of color to the finished drawing is an added bonus. Materials fee of $8 included in the cost of the course for metal and 5 x 7 substrate, which will be provided by the instructor. Drawing experience necessary. Please bring lunch and snacks. Cake Decorating for the Beginner

 Have you ever wished you could decorate a cake for family and friends? Cake decorating is creative and fun. Learn the basics of design, construction, borders and flowers with Susan, a graduate of Johnson & Wales University of Culinary Arts. Learn the various icing types and its proper use, basic color theories, freehand design and creating stencils. Students need to bring a cake for the final project.  A $10 material fee is included. No Discounts.

Chalk Paint Your Furniture or Kitchen Cabinets

This class is for YOU!  Each student will learn the simple Royal Chalk 4-step system for painting your furniture in this course.  In this one evening class, you will learn how to create any look your desire…vintage, cottage, antiqued, modern…. in any painted color you desire at a fraction of the cost of new cabinets or new furniture. No experience required! Miki Earle, creator of The Royal Chalk paint line, has taught hundreds of DIY students to successfully refinish furniture and cabinetry.  Visit the royalchalk.com site to get an idea of the beauty you can create. Bring a small portable piece of furniture (For the sake of time no more than 4 spindles on any piece please)  or wooden craft (cleaned thoroughly in a degreasing soap like DAWN) to paint AND a one cup sample mixed in the color you love of flat low-primer paint. We love the Home Depot BEHR Premium Plus flat sheen 8 ounce samples. They will mix-in your color choice.    Wear paint clothes or an apron and bring a small drop cloth. All chalking materials, finishes, paint brushes and tools will be provided. Cheese Making Fundamentals

In this four-hour class, students will have a hands-on experience in making a variety of cheeses. This cheese making class will start with the making of feta cheese using local goat's milk if available. From there, students will make Monterey jack cheese using cow's milk and then make ricotta. Samples of the cheese will be presented with some apples and crackers during the course. At the end of the course, students will take home feta and ricotta cheese. Along with the cheese, students will also receive muslin cloth, mesophilic and chevre starters for making cheese, and all the recipes. The making of chevre cheese will also be discussed. This course will be taught with the focus of being able to make cheese using common kitchen equipment. Please bring 2 small containers to bring cheese home in. Please Note: this class will be held at Diana’s home kitchen at 919 Post Road in Bowdoinham. Students should go directly there. No discounts.
