Session I: Cruising Under Sail (12-17)

Calendar Jun 28, 2021 at 8 am, runs for 1 week

Merrymeeting charts a new course this summer in partnership with Sailing Ships Maine. Students will learn to row a dinghy, set and strike sail, steer, navigate, use a marine radio, operate a small outboard, watch the weather, tie knots, and follow basic safety. The primary instructional boat, the Paul Bolger-designed 25 yawl, is a strong, beamy, shallow-draft cruising boat ideal for Merrymeeting Bay. The decks are wide and spacious and will keep students socially distanced as they spend the week outdoors.

Students should bring lunch, snacks, water bottle, sunscreen, a hat, and wear appropriate shoes (no flip flops).

The cost of each session is $295 and includes a one-year membership in U.S. Sailing; U.S. Sailing Small Boat Sailor Certification, full access to the U.S. Sailing Skill-Up App to help students and instructors track individual student accomplishments; National Association of State Boating Law Administrators safety course certification; and a Sailing Ships Maine T-shirt, rope, and journal. No discounts.

Basic Pistol Handling ~ Coed

Calendar Jul 13, 2021 at 6 pm, runs for 2 weeks

Basics of Pistol Handling will cover; Safety at home and the range, principal parts and types of actions, how to handle a pistol in a safe manner, fundamentals of pistol shooting, pistol shooting positions, common malfunctions and cleaning, selecting a pistol, and qualifying on a range. The course meets the state of Maine minimum for a Concealed Carry Permit if you pass the 50 question written exam and qualify by putting 5 rounds in 4 target circles (20 rounds total) at 10'. Students will receive the NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting textbook. You do not need to own a pistol for this class, but if you do, you are encouraged to bring it to class with no ammunition. Range time will be scheduled separately from the classroom sessions. If you wish to shoot at the range to qualify and do not own a pistol, one will be provided with 50 rounds of ammunition for $25. If bringing your own pistol to the range, bring 50 rounds of ammunition.  No Discounts. The fee for range time is $50, payable to the instructor. Session III: Malaga Island History Talk

Malaga Island is a 41-acre island at the mouth of the New Meadows River in Casco Bay, ME. It was the site of an interracial community from the Civil War until 1911 when the residents were forcibly evicted from the island. Travel back in history and learn about who used the island before the colony, about the colony and its history, and then about it now. Take a virtual tour with Master Maine Guide, Alice Bean Andrenyak, who specializes in its tumultuous history. The class takes place on Zoom. No discounts

Students must have an audio and video-enabled computer, tablet, or smartphone to participate.
