“Why do two colors, put one next to the other, sing? Can one really explain this?” Picasso is talking about color theory!—which in its simplest terms is the way color behaves in context, and the relationships between colors. In this class we will expand color wheel knowledge, explore color schemes, learn color vocabulary, and play with ideas about how to use color effectively, and purposefully. We will ask questions like: What is the color doing in this space? Is it coming forward or going back? Why is a bright color like yellow receding in space in this painting, while in another painting yellow is the brightest value and one of the first parts of the painting our eye moves toward? We will share our discoveries in our studio time together as we explore fun color exercises. You are welcome to work in watercolor, acrylic, or a bit of both. Working in watercolor will allow you to see colors interact with each other in the mixing process. Please bear in mind this is not a watercolor technique class. Make sure acrylics are at least student grade so that when mixed your colors still have vibrancy. Berol prismacolor colored pencils will work with some of the exercises, and if you have Color-aid paper from a previous art class, or color swatches bring them! A materials must have list will be provided before the first class meeting, All levels are welcome and encouraged.
